Works fine… don’t forget to oil it, July 7, 2005

I bought this because a professional arborist wanted $300 to prune the tree in front of the house. My job ain’t as pretty, but I got it done. The saw works great on large branches. Not so much so on smaller branches that flex so it can’t get a bite and ends up leaving splintered ends. For the cleanest job you’d want to use a pole trimmer on the small stuff. I’m hoping the leaves will just grow back and cover my imperfections.

Two things you need to know if, like me, you’re inclined to just charge up the tool and go to work. #1 the chain needs frequent re-tightening during the first hours of use. (A little wrench is included to do this… very simple.) #2 don’t forget to OIL THE CHAIN… something that’s self-evident to people who’ve used a big chain saw but not intuitive to the rest of us.

Great Ergonomics, Weak Power, Wind Your Own Spools, June 11, 2007

I got this to replace a 2001 American Gardner 18 volt cordless trimmer that finally would no longer hold a charge. The Worx has much improved ergonimics, the handles, telescoping shaft, adjustable head angle and light weight are nice. However it lacks the power of the American Gardner, it is unable to cut through as heavy a growth and the string that comes with it is crap. The auto feeder jammed several times the first time I used it and the line would not cut well compared to the 5 sided Shakespeare .65 line I had been using when rewinding my spools on the American Gardner trimmer. So I unwound the Worx spool and replaced their line with the Shakespeare line. The result was much improved cutting. I recommend this to everyone. It is easy to wind your own spools and buying them from Worx is robbery. You can get a large supply of line at Wal-Mart or Home Depot for the cost of one of their spools. The jamming is due to their poor winding of the line. I have not had a feed problem since I did my own. I also found that the battery needs to be kept on the charger constantly as it will not hold a decent charge between weekly mowings. It just needs a bigger motor and battery. When it dies I will get another American Gardner cordless.

This line trimmer has some very nice features. It also has some weaknesses.

Strengths:

- electric cordelss (a requirement for me)= no mess/fuss & low noise
- lightweight
- adjustable trim head is very handy – I’ve never seen this on a line trimmer before. I like it a lot.
- durable – seems like a solid design.
- easily swapped batteries. Inexpensive battery replacement.

Weaknesses:

- not as powerful as their ads led me to belive. I’ve used a Craftsman 10 in. Electric Weedwacker for the past two years which uses a powerful 24 volt battery system. This trimmer uses an 18 volt. I’m not sure if that’s what makes the Craftsman more powerful but something does. The Worx does fine with grass, but I don’t think it would work well with anything heavier…
- so so as an edger. Not really powerful enough to dig the edge – but it will trim it and the wheels actually make it work fairly well for this.
- advertise how great the auto feed system is. Mine often required me to take off the bottom and manually feed it. The spool did seem to be poorly rolled so maybe I had a non-typical problem. Seems like it worked ok when the line didn’ get caught up inside. Since they boast it as a selling feature, I’m guessing my problems with it were unique to me…

I was previously using all gas powered yard tools, blower, hedge trimmer, string trimmer, great products but loud, smelly and sometimes difficult to start. I had been looking at electric powered products to get rid of those trips to the gas station, however, pulling an electrical cord around my yard did not appeal to me at all. Then i came across this kit on amazon. The Black & Decker is a good one IMO so i took a chance and ordered from amazon.

I have been highly satisfied the battery power last well enough on my 12,000 square foot lot. The tool are nice and quiet and i can do my yard work early in the morning without disturbing the neighbors. I must say all 3 products work great for their intended purpose. The bonus IMO is the batter charger mount that can charge all three included batteries at the same time. Also, the mountable storage station is great and makes storing the equipment easy. My father came over and was hooked on these and placed an order the next day, great products at a great price from amazon what could be better, lol…….

UPDATE: I’ve owned this set for over 2 1/2 years now, and I only like it more. I’ve seen no drop off in battery power, and I find more uses for the blower than I would have thought. It’s great for blowing sawdust out of my garage and I even use it to help dry my car after I wash it. The weed wacker continues to function like a champ, and the pruner, though rarely used, works great. There’s nothing like cordless electric for convenience!

More than a few reviewers have complained about short run times with these tools. I have no such complaints. In fact, I find that one charge on one battery is enough to edge and weed-whack my front and back yards and trim my hedges.

A lot of people don’t seem to understand that in places where people want to live yards are getting smaller and smaller. In San Diego, in a subdivision built 25 years ago, my front and back yards combined are about 1500 square feet. My friend just bought a new luxury home in San Diego that has a “postage stamp” front yard. There isn’t even enough room to park a Camry on his grass.

Another friend in Tennessee recently purchased a multi-thousand dollar commercial lawn mower with a 52″ cutting path to mow the grass on his property. This set is perfect for most San Diego lawns (and even those that are a fair bit larger), but it’s not going to be nearly as suitable to a backwoods Tennessee lot.

Before you buy these, think. The larger your yard, the less suitable you’ll find these. So if your property is much larger than the average subdivision lot, these probably aren’t for you. And it’s just common sense that the larger your lot is, the more batteries you’ll need. If you have a larger yard, don’t buy the set and then whine about having to switch out batteries. These aren’t made for your two acre property in the sticks!

As you would expect, the blower does not rival the performance of a corded model. But it blows hard enough for most lawn care needs (it will move grass clippings and loose dirt). The weed whacker (string trimmer) is great. The head pivots for edging and the automatic line feed system works great.

The hedge trimmer is even better. I have a much smaller rechargeable Black and Decker hedge trimmer with an internal battery pack. I use it for most of my shrubs because it is lighter and more maneuverable. I only use the one included with this kit on a few larger hedges, and it performs well.

I had been using corded electric tools, but the cords were always such a hassle that I found myself putting off yard work. Gas tools would be overkill. They require too much maintenance and I don’t want to store gasoline. These cordless tools are the perfect compromise. I’m just sorry that I didn’t buy them sooner.

There is a noticeable difference in the power between my corded and cordless tools. While operating, the corded tools seem to operate at a higer speed and with more torque.

The most noticeable difference between the corded and cordless tools is the much reduced airflow speed with the cordless blower. As to the other tools, I suspect that if I went to clear some particularly thick weeds the cordless string trimmer might bog down. I similarly suspect that the hedge trimmer might bog down if I was trimming thick branches with it. So I’m keeping my corded tools for those rare occasions that I might need them.

I purchased a refurbished blower that came with two batteries several years ago and it is doing as advertised. I use it after mowing to clean the sidewalk and driveway. I also use it on a brick patio. It is not intended for leaf blowing on grass so don’t get it if that is what you need.

I have a medium-size suburban house sitting on about half an acre.

In the past year I’ve used this to:
-clear the walks after mowing and/or trimming,
-keep the garage floor swept out (great especially in the fall) and
-clear off my deck in less than a minute.

Great complement to the cordless trimmer in this family (the batteries are interchangeable).

Big plusses: light and simple to use; enough wind for small-to-medium jobs (get a gas-powered blower if you can’t use a rake for your leaves) and enough battery power for about 10-to- 15 minutes of blowing.

Minuses: Battery life a little short; not good for year-round outdoor use in the north (you shouldn’t charge this thing in temps below 40); no easy way to buy a charging station and extra batteries.

Be CAREFUL! This is does NOT necessarily use the same battery as B&D Firestorm products. Some Firestorm batteries are the wrong size and voltage. Others have a stub which fits into the handle; the compatible B&D 18v products look like a big fat black Advil tablet (sort of).

I will probably buy most of the B&D products that are compatible, eventually. They seem to work for me.

Pretty good – but don’t get rid of your corded blower, April 6, 2004

I just bought the B&D NS118 blower along with the NST2018 cordless string trimmer. I have a corner lot with long parkways and a lot of sidewalk footage, and have grown tired of dealing with up to 175 feet of extension cables for my corded trimmer and blower. I’ve had a nice battery-powered mower for several years, and felt it was time to go all cordless. This new pair of tools seemed promising, particularly because of the removable battery design.

After only one use I can say I’m reasonably satisfied, but not fully sold.

Handling: This is probably one of the lightest blowers available and is easy to handle. But the way the nozzle attaches is not good at all. It’s difficult to remove, and the design invites finger accidents.

Power: The blower is nowhere near as powerful as my corded one. B&D refers to this as a “broom” and that’s an appropriate description. It works well on surfaces where you might otherwise use a push broom. It’s not good at getting leaves out of grass or flowerbeds. But in a way, the lower airflow can be better for sweeping than a corded blower. My corded one, even at its low setting, can often send debris flying all over the place. This one calmly moves stuff where you want it to go.

Battery: The batteries are compact. The blower comes with two of them, and I needed them both to complete one job. I guess I’m okay with this approach. It makes sense to lug around only as much weight as is necessary rather than carry a much heavier battery the whole time. If you buy this along with a trimmer as I did, you’ll have four batteries and two chargers available for swapping. And if you happen to have a FireStorm 18v drill, you can apparently swap batteries with that system as well.

Quality: Build quality seems similar to most B&D stuff, meaning it will probably work for a few years.

Overall: Going cordless does simplify my work and save me time, but this tool isn’t appropriate for all cleanup jobs. I have a month to make up my mind about keeping it. But even if it passes muster, I suspect I’ll want to hang onto my corded blower for the occasional heavy job.

We live in So. California with lots of cement decks and brick hardscape in both front and back. We also have a fairly large pool with many bougainvillea plants constantly in bloom.

Having used both a gas powered blower (too strong an airstream) and an electric in the past and not wanting to take a chance on dragging the electric cord thru the pool, we really wanted something that could pinpoint the stream a little better so as not to blow half the dust and leaves back in the water. The Black and Decker Cordless Broom fits the job perfectly.

Every morning about 8:am (the cordless blower is relatively quiet) I go out for my routine yard maintenance and in ten minutes the job is done and I then switch batteries from the charger so that the next day, it’s ready for duty.

Will Change Your Idea of Mowing, August 28, 2001

This summer, sick of my dirty, smelly, loud gas-powered mower, I decided to purchase a reel mower. As someone who considers himself to be environmentally friendly, I no longer felt comfortable using a polluting machine on my lawn. At the same time, I didn’t want to turn lawn mowing into a huge, difficult task. After researching every model on the market, I decided I would give the Scotts 2000-20 reel mower a try. My idea of lawn mowing has completely changed. What used to be a tedious, annoying task is now pleasant and relaxing, due to the ease of use and functionality of this mower. Out of the box, it is very clear how to put this mower together, and it should take no more than about 30 minutes to get the assembly done. Just remember to put some dishwashing detergent inside the rubber handle cover before you slide it on. Then you’re ready to go. The height adjustment, which is located near one of the rear wheels, is very easy to access: you simply push a lever in and slide it to the correct height level. The height levels are clearly marked right on a dial (a lot easier than having to get out your wrench and screwdriver for most gas-powered mowers). In actual cutting, this mower is very smooth. With minimal energy, the blades spin with good speed and torque, easily cutting the grass down to size. I have a somewhat weedy lawn, and I was concerned that this mower might bog down, but it cuts everything with the same smoothness. My lawn also has several uneven spots, but this mower handled that nicely as well. The rear wheels keep the mower balanced as you push it. If you push faster, of course, the blades will run faster. However, at a casual pace, the blades definitely spin fast enough to take care of a typical lawn. I have even “let my lawn go” a couple of times this summer (it grew to about 6″ in height at one point), but the mower handles it just fine. As you’re mowing, you’ll notice that there is a lot less dust flying around, no smell of fumes, and you can listen to birds and natural sounds the entire time you’re outside. This reel mower cuts the grass more cleanly for sure — you can see that the grass is greener when you’re done, without brown tips. When I cut my lawn, I leave the cuttings there and allow them to mulch into the soil. The mower is light enough to lift and carry into a storage area. You don’t have to keep oil and gas around, so this mower takes up the minimal amount of space. Here are the only disadvantages to this mower: (1) You can only get about 6″ to an edge; (2) If a stick gets into the blade, you have to stop and pull it out; (3) You will not be visiting the local lawnmower repair shop every season for a tune up, spark plugs, air filter, and any number of other unpredictable problems. Since I started using this mower, several people have asked me if it’s more difficult to use, if it’s slower, or cuts worse. I assume potential buyers are asking the same questions. I will venture to say that it is actually JUST AS EASY TO USE A REEL MOWER AS IT IS TO USE A GAS-POWERED MODEL. There is NOTHING about a gas-powered mower than makes it easier to use, and gas-powered mowers do not save any time, espcially when you consider all the peripheral needs of owning one. Overall, this is an example of a simple, low-tech solution to a common need.

I just eagerly put my reel mower together, having spent much time researching whether I should get one or not. The reviews on here were especially helpful. In short, I’m glad I bought it.

Pluses:
1. Safer: no flying rocks or other projectiles, your kids won’t sneak up on you and get extremities caught in the blade the way they do with gas mowers. As an ED physician, this is an especially important observation that I don’t think had been pointed out before.
2. Quieter: my neighbors are thankful, as are my ears
3. No smoke, no gas fumes
4. Easier handling than gas mower, lighter, can get in crevices more easily and safely
5. Better for environment, save on gas, oil.
6. Easier to start-up; I’m more likely to cut the grass with this mower
7. Doesn’t take any longer to mow then lawn vs. a gas mower (and if you gas mower is finicky, will probalby be faster).

Negatives:
1. Requires a bit more elbow grease with thick grass, especially on hills. Not a lot more, but a bit more (good exercise though).
2. Tall grass/weeds will not be easily cut with this; anything taller than 6-8 inches probably won’t spring back up in time for the blades to cut them
3. 20″ cutting swath a bit more narrow than your average gas mower, so you may need a few more passes. On flat land, it’s no problem whatsoever.

I’m happy with this mower, how well it holds up remains to be seen. Construction quality is decent, the price and free shipping can’t be beat. Haven’t tried the $200+ models of reel mowers, so I can’t comment.

If you have a smaller (< 0.5 acre), relatively flat yard, what are you waiting for?! If you like to think of mowing the lawn as exercise and have a bit larger yard, this may also be for you. Lastly, if you have kids and safety is a concern, (yes, you Volvo all-wheel-drive owners out there), a reel mower is also the way to go.

Good Mower, June 7, 2009

I have owned this mower for over a year now. I have two large lawns including an area for my dog run which gets high sometimes because I don’t mow every week. The major reason I considered buying an electric mower was that the gas rotary mowers I have owned always were hard to start after the Winter season. I saw an ad for the Neuton and a cordless electric seemed attractive. No cord to run over or move around.

RATING DETAILS
Here is where the Neuton earned points:

1) Its starts every time.
2) Its environmentally friendly. No exhaust and no noise.
3) Its lighter than my old steel gas mower (slightly).
4) No leaking fluids when you want to turn it over to clean or maintain the blade.
5) Not that I don’t own and like many foreign produced items, but this is made in America (Vermont). It feels good to me to support our domestic market!

Here is where the Neuton lost a few points:

1) After the first year the battery seems to be losing some of its charging capacity. Where I used to get an hour and a half’s life on a full charge, now I get maybe an hour. Note this is a lead/acid battery and not a more high tech variety.
2) The trimmer attachment works, but its not really that maneuverable. Keep your corded electric string trimmer and pass on the too expensive trimmer attachment.
3) It takes me two days to mow all my grass. Seriously consider buying the extra battery if you have a lot of lawn to cut.
4) If you expect this mower to be as robust as your gas rotary model, you will probably be disappointed. But since the gas mowers where I live no longer come with a variable throttle, you don’t really lose that much power. I see Neuton has a newer, more powerful version now. I would probably have purchased that one if it were available at the time.

Over-all I am happy with the purchase.

Terrific product. I love it. Got two batteries with it, but have never had to use two in order to finish my lawn. I’m using it on mulching mode and feel very good about that rather than putting clippings into the city’s garbage. I have good luck with it as long as I don’t try to rush. I just push and pull and it works great. I agree that the edger isn’t totally satisfactory, but it is very easy to put on, use, and remove. My dad has had one of these for many years and still uses it and loves it. (He is in his eighties.) I find mowing pure pleasure now. Before I hated all the hassle and especially yanking the cord to get the stinky things started. This is a good, well-established company, too. Oh, and it is quiet!!

Better than a gas powered mower, June 29, 2009

I love this mower, it has been more than capable in mowing my lawn without losing a charge. When I first used this mower I had a very long neglected yard and this took care of the weeds and the tall grass with no problem. I did have to dump the bag quite a bit but no more often than I would have with any other mower. I will never go back to a gas mower or go to a corded electric mower again.
